The textile and clothing industry emits up to 1.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year, accounting for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. More and more brands are beginning to pay attention to sustainable fabric manufacturing under this severe environmental challenges.
Here are five trends for future trends:
1. Biodegradable Textiles: About 92 million tons of textile waste end up in landfills every year. The decomposition of these wastes may take hundreds of years, while emitting various greenhouse gases and harmful chemicals, causing pollution to the air, groundwater and soil. Biodegradable fabric can reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Sustainable dyeing technology (such as solution dyed): Approximately 200 tons of water are consumed to produce one ton of fabric, and many water resources are contaminated by residual dyes and chemicals.
3. Catalyst recovery and fiber regeneration: The technology quickly and cost-effectively converts waste textiles into valuable recycled materials while reducing the release of harmful substances.
4. Recycle polyester: Polyester is one of the most common materials used in the apparel industry, accounting for 50% of global apparel manufacturing, however, traditional polyester fibers are derived from fossil fuels and have serious environmental impacts. Many brands start to use recycle material, and most of the recycled polyester comes from plastic water bottles, not from recycle clothing. As a result, the best ideal recycling system is textile-to-textile, which requires more technological innovation and large scale implementation.
5. Technological innovation promotes sustainable fashion: Virtual fitting rooms and 3D body scanning technology allow consumers to find clothing that suit them.
