On January 14, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico unveiled an economic initiative aimed at limiting the influx of Chinese goods into the country.
As reported by Reuters, Sheinbaum also expressed her support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during her address, asserting that it represents the sole viable strategy for competing with China, with plans for renegotiation set for 2026.
President Donald Trump has alleged that Mexico has created a backdoor for Chinese products to enter the United States, thereby evading current U.S. tariffs. While Mexico has refuted these claims, it has taken steps to intensify its efforts against the smuggling of goods from Asia and has implemented tariffs on Chinese e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu.
Furthermore, President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed an increase in local sourcing within sectors like textiles and automobiles, which have historically relied on imports from China, while also promoting the growth of Mexican steel manufacturers.
