EU Partners with Mexico to Create a “Green Port” at Guaymas, Sonora

Objective: The European Union, Mexican federal and Sonoran authorities, and the Navy are collaborating to transform the Port of Guaymas (Sonora) into Mexico’s first modern “green port” as part of the Plan Sonora nearshoring initiative.

Strategic Importance: Guaymas is considered a critical Pacific logistics hub due to its rail links to the U.S., proximity to American markets, and capacity for increased nearshoring demand.

Scale of Transformation: Current container traffic could grow by up to 90×. Investments so far include about US$200 million from the Mexican Navy, with private capital expected.

Green Tech Features:

  • Powered by surplus solar energy from Sonora.
  • Infrastructure to charge electric ships at the docks.
  • Emulating sustainability standards from European ports like Antwerp.

Infrastructure & Services: Plans include:

  • New container terminals
  • A roll-on/roll-off (Ro‑Ro) terminal for vehicles
  • Facilities for cruise ships
  • Mineral logistics capabilities.

Global Support: Companies such as Maersk, NYK Line, and MSC have confirmed involvement. The Port of Antwerp is advising on best environmental practices
