Shein Moves to Enhance Product Safety Testing Following EU Alert

EU Warning: On May 26, the EU’s Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) network, supported by national consumer authorities and the European Commission, issued a stern warning to Shein. The company was flagged for various violations of EU consumer protection laws and given a 30‑day deadline to respond or risk fines up to 6% of its global revenue.

Safety Measures Planned: In response, Shein announced plans to ramp up product safety testing—aiming for 2.5 million tests in 2025, up from 2 million in 2024, backed by a $15 million compliance budget.

Marketplace Clean-up: The retailer also said it has removed over 540 sellers from its marketplace for failing to meet quality or regulatory standards.

Safety Gaps Noted: Earlier investigations revealed misleading pricing tactics (“fake discounts”), unclear return policies, exaggerated sustainability claims, hidden contact info, and instances of unsafe products being sold
