European Consumer Group Accuses Shein of Using “Dark Patterns” to Drive Overconsumption

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has filed a complaint with the European Commission, accusing Chinese fast-fashion platform Shein of using manipulative “dark patterns” in its marketing to push consumers into excessive buying, raising both consumer protection and environmental concerns.

Key Allegations:

  • Misleading tactics like false countdown timers, fake discounts, limited-time offers, and pressure to buy quickly.
  • Lack of transparency on product availability and delivery terms.
  • Use of non-sustainable production methods and potentially harmful chemicals in products.

BEUC is demanding Shein:

  • Disclose clear, accurate product and delivery information.
  • Stop manipulative marketing practices in the EU market.

Shein responded by saying it is working to improve transparency and comply with relevant EU laws.

The EU Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) has also launched a formal investigation into Shein for violating EU consumer protection rules.
