Overview On August 26, Australia joined Taiwan, Austria, France, and other nations in suspending some mail services to the United States. This is a response to the “complex and rapidly changing situation” caused by President Donald Trump’s upcoming new parcel tariff policies.
Australia Post’s Decision
- Suspension: Australia Post will stop accepting most packages addressed to the U.S. and Puerto Rico until further notice.
- Exceptions: Gifts, letters, and documents valued below $100 USD (approximately $3,000 TWD) are not affected.
- Official Statement: Executive General Manager Gary Starr stated this temporary measure is necessary to develop a workable long-term solution for customers.
Impact on Other Countries
- Taiwan: Suspended commercial/commodity mail services to the U.S. starting August 26.
- Japan: Will stop accepting personal gifts and goods valued over $100 USD sent to the U.S. starting tomorrow.
- Others: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, India, and New Zealand have already taken similar measures.
The U.S. Policy Change Starting August 29, the U.S. will fully suspend “de minimis” tariff exemptions for low-value goods. This means all imported mail valued at or below $800 USD will now be subject to customs duties.
