Spain Invests €30.5 Million in Circular Fashion and Textiles

The Funding The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) is providing €30.5 million in subsidies to promote a circular economy in the textile, fashion, and footwear industries. This initiative is part of the EU’s NextGeneration fund.

Project Highlights A total of 37 projects were selected, with a total investment value of €74.9 million. Key details include:

  • Participants: 55% are led by medium-sized enterprises, and nearly one-third are small businesses.
  • Grant Amounts: Individual projects received between €110,000 and €5.3 million.
  • Innovation Examples:
    • Improving second-hand e-commerce platforms.
    • Using plant-based dyes for fabrics.
    • Creating recycled yarn from coffee waste.
    • Developing chemical-free shoe soles.
    • Turning medical textile waste into antibacterial building materials.

The Context Spain is one of the few EU countries with a complete textile and footwear supply chain, accounting for 2.7% of its GDP. However, the country faces a major challenge: it generates about 900,000 tons of textile waste annually, but the recycling rate is only 12%. Reducing raw material consumption and increasing recycling are the primary goals for the industry’s transformation.
