Sustainable Uniforms: A Circular Economy Initiative

1. The Core Concept: Single-Material Fabrics

Currently, most clothes are made from mixed fibers, which are difficult to recycle. This initiative focuses on using 100% single-material fabrics (such as 100% polyester or recycled PET yarn).

  • Benefits: These clothes can be 100% recycled and turned back into brand-new garments, not just “second-hand” clothing.
  • Environmental Impact: Between 2022 and 2023, recycling these materials saved over 845 tons of fabric and reduced carbon emissions by approximately 146,439 kg.

2. Case Study: Taoyuan International Airport (TIAC)

Taoyuan International Airport Services (TIAC) is leading the way by transitioning its 2,600+ employees to these sustainable uniforms.

  • Initial Concerns: Employees were initially worried about the comfort, cost, and durability of 100% polyester compared to traditional blended fabrics.
  • The Results: After a trial period, the feedback was highly positive:
    • Durability: The uniforms are wear-resistant and do not deform or fade easily.
    • Comfort: They are lightweight, moisture-wicking, and fast-drying—ideal for outdoor workers.
    • Convenience: They are wrinkle-resistant and look professional.
  • The Goal: TIAC plans to have all employee uniforms made from recyclable single materials by 2030.

3. How the Recycling Process Works

  1. Sorting: Used clothes are collected and sorted.
  2. Processing: They are shredded and purified.
  3. Regeneration: Physical technology turns the waste into eco-friendly raw materials (pellets).
  4. Production: The pellets are spun into yarn, woven into fabric, and sewn into new uniforms.
